The first chapter of St. Luke’s Gospel records the visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary to her cousin, Elizabeth, and today the Church celebrates this event as a feast. St. Luke’s Gospel records that at the Annunciation, Mary was told by the angel that Elizabeth was six months pregnant. After the angel departed, Mary went to visit Elizabeth and Zechariah in the hill country of Judah and stayed with them for three months before returning home. The scriptural account of the visitation includes the Canticle of Mary, also known as the Magnificat, which can be found in the first chapter of St. Luke’s Gospel, and it is similar in content and structure to many of the Psalms.
