The Saint Challenge Day 37 – St. Ambrose of Milan – December 7

Ambrose was born to Roman nobility in the year 340. He received an education in the classics, became a Christian, and eventually became the governor of Milan. During a heated dispute among the citizens about who should replace the bishop who recently died, they praised Ambrose for his efforts to bring peace to the argument and insisted he become their new bishop. He resisted but gave in to keep the peace. After he was ordained he gave all his riches to the poor. His intelligence and powerful speaking skills converted scores of people, including St. Augustine, and his many works earned him the title of Doctor of the Church.

CHALLENGE

This time of year often brings strife and arguments. Today, write down this quote from St. Ambrose and recite it every morning until the feast of the Epiphany: “When we find ourselves in company with quarrelsome, eccentric individuals… we should take refuge in silence, and the wisest plan is not to reply to people whose behavior is so preposterous.”
