The Saint Challenge Day 71 – St. William of Bourges – January 10

Born in France in 1140, William of Bourges’ father wanted him to be a soldier, but William chose the religious life instead. He was educated by his uncle Pierre, who was an archdeacon, then was ordained. He enjoyed quiet time in prayer at the altar, and eventually joined the Cistercians, rising to the position of abbot. In 1200, he was elected Archbishop of Bourges, France, but he declined. His superior general told him to accept, followed by an appeal from Pope Innocent III, after which he took the position. As archbishop, he worked passionately and cheerfully for everyone in his diocese, and he died while kneeling in prayer. It is said he performed 18 miracles in his life, and 18 more after his death.

CHALLENGE

As Archbishop, St. William of Bourges doubled his penances, saying he had to do penance for himself and those he was responsible for. Today, think about whom you are responsible for, then prayerfully consider what penance you can do for them in the form of an extra prayer said for them every day.
