The Saint Challenge Day 176 – St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen – April 24

Mark Rey was born in Germany in 1577. He went to college at the University of Freiburg, got his law degree, and studied theology and canon law in his spare time. Soon after beginning his career as a lawyer he became known as “the poor man’s lawyer” for his work with the needy, and not long after he became appalled at the greed and corruption of the other lawyers. He followed his brother into the Capuchin order and took the name “Fidelis,” embracing a life of simplicity and poverty. He gave away his wealth to poor seminarians and led a successful evangelization mission of other Capuchins to convert Calvinists and Zwinglians in Switzerland. He was martyred for his preaching at the age of 45.

CHALLENGE

St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen said, “Woe to me if I should prove myself but a half-hearted soldier in the service of my thorn-crowned Captain.” What we do in the service of our Lord we should always do with purpose and with zeal. Are you a half-hearted soldier? When you serve Christ and his Church, remember that you are serving your thorn-crowned Captain. Resolve to serve him well.
