While Europe was fighting World War I, in Fatima, Portugal on May 13, 1917, an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children, ages nine, eight, and six. The children said the Blessed Virgin Mary was dressed in all white, more brilliant than the sun, with a gold-edged mantle and carrying a Rosary in her hand. She asked the children to pray the Rosary and to come back on the thirteenth day of each month at the same time of day. Over six months, the Fatima apparitions brought prophecies, a call to prayer and consecration, and over 70,000 spectators to the final apparition in October, an event known as the Miracle of the Sun.
CHALLENGE
In the first apparition, the Blessed Virgin Mary told the children, “Pray the Rosary every day to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war.” Pope Benedict XVI said the central message of all the Fatima apparitions was “the exhortation to prayer as the path of salvation for souls and, likewise, the summons to penance and conversion.” Today, pray the Rosary for world peace and the conversion of sinners.
