Today, November 1st, is the Solemnity of All Saints. The celebration of All Saints’ Day traces its origin to the 4th Century when feasts were held to celebrate all the Christian saints, known or unknown. Back then, different regions of Christianity celebrated the saints on different days, usually around Easter or Pentecost. Pope Gregory III is generally credited with making November 1st the official date of celebration around the year 731, though it didn’t become a holy day of obligation until the year 835 by a decree of Pope Gregory IV.
CHALLENGE
Being a saint is a series of small steps and the first step is to be—and stay—in a state of sanctifying grace. That means going to Confession, and going to Mass on holy days of obligation… like today. So your challenge is to go to Mass today, and if you’re not in a state of grace, abstain from the Eucharist and get to Confession as soon as possible.
