Little is certain about the early life of David of Wales, who was born sometime in the 6th Century. Many legends and lore exist about him, but what is known for certain is that the patron saint of Wales was known for his life of strict asceticism. To the monks in the 12 monasteries that he founded, he taught his life of long hours of prayer, silence, hard manual labor, and diet of bread, vegetables, and water. David became the bishop of the port city of Menevia, which connected Wales to Ireland, and eventually, he rose to be archbishop after attending a synod and preaching against the Pelagian heresy. His holiness and eloquence at preaching grew tremendous crowds who were converted by the thousands.
