The Saint Challenge Day 141 – St. Salvator of Horta – March 20

Salvator of Horta was born in Spain in 1520. His parents were poor, and he was orphaned while still young. After apprenticing as a shoemaker in Barcelona, he followed God’s call and at the age of 20, he became a Franciscan brother known for his humility, charity, and asceticism. He served the friary as a cook and a laborer, and also as the primary alms collector in town. During his rounds collecting alms, he would often come across the sick, and he would pray over them and heal them by making the sign of the cross over them. His reputation grew, and despite being moved to other towns, crowds of as many as 2000 a week still flocked to him. Before his death in 1567, he cured countless blind, deaf, epileptics, lame, and paralyzed.

CHALLENGE

St. Salvator of Horta told the sick they must examine their conscience and receive the sacraments of penance and the Eucharist worthily. Those who did not do so were not healed by his prayers. Too often, we take the sacraments for granted, and as a result, we miss out on their graces. Today, examine your conscience. Are you receiving penance and the Eucharist worthily?
