It’s not known when Rupert was born, other than it was sometime in the 7th Century. His story starts when he was the bishop of Worms, Germany, where he was known for his life of virtue, simplicity, and love of God. Tales of his piety and wisdom drew people from far and wide, and the pagan Duke Theodo sent messengers to Bishop Rupert and asked for him to come and evangelize the people of Bavaria. Bishop Rupert accepted and traveled to Ratisbon where he baptized Duke Theodo and his nobles, made thousands of converts, and performed miracles. On the ruins of an old town he erected a church and monastery which he named after St. Peter, and a Christian town soon flourished around it. Today we know the town as Salzburg, and Bishop Rupert died there in the year 710.
CHALLENGE
When St. Rupert Christianized the people and their pagan temples, he didn’t knock down the temples but cleared them of pagan elements and consecrated them as churches. Every family’s home is known as the Domestic Church. Today, take a walk around your Domestic Church with the intent of identifying—and removing—any pagan artifacts.
