Louis Grignion was born in Montfort, France in 1673. His parents had a total of 18 children, though 10 died as infants. By the age of four Louis was known for his docility, apostolic zeal, and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and he would spend hours at a time in prayer. He entered a Jesuit college at the age of 12 and began his path to the priesthood. He immersed himself in the Church Fathers, Doctors of the Church, and anything the saints wrote on Marian devotion. He founded two religious institutes and a missionary group, preached against the heresy of Jansenism, and is perhaps the most well-known author on the topic of Marian devotion.
CHALLENGE
The greatest contribution of St. Louis de Montfort to the Catholic Church is his works on Marian devotion. St. Pope John Paul II called True Devotion to Mary “indispensable to anyone who means to give himself without reserve to Christ and to the work of redemption.” If you haven’t done the Total Consecration to Mary, pick up St. Louis de Montfort’s book and do it. If you have already done the consecration, renew it.
