Born in Italy in 1386, Rita Lotti’s devout parents made a lasting impression on her. She enjoyed visiting the Augustinian nuns and showed an interest in entering the religious life. This, however, had to wait. When she was 12, her parents arranged for her to be married, and she reluctantly but obediently obeyed them and married the town watchman, who had a fiery temper, but she remained patient and kind. They had twin sons, and after 18 years of his physical and emotional abuse, he was stabbed to death during a fight between warring families. After her sons died, she became an Augustinian nun, received the marks of the stigmata, and spent the last four years of her life bedridden, living almost entirely on the Eucharist.
CHALLENGE
The sons of St. Rita of Cascia swore vengeance on their father’s killer, and when she couldn’t talk them out of it, she prayed that God allow them to die rather than allow them to commit a mortal sin. Her sons died of illness within a year, in a state of grace. St. Rita had total faith in Divine Providence. Who’s salvation seems impossible? Put your full trust in God and pray for them today, and ask St. Rita to intercede for you.
