Born in Italy sometime in the 3rd Century, very little is certain about the early life of St. Elmo the bishop. During the period of persecution of Christians, he was caught and brought to Diocletian, brutally tortured and imprisoned, and then an angel helped him escape. He made a bunch of converts, was recaptured, brought to Emperor Maximian, and again he was tortured and imprisoned, and again the angel helped him escape. He converted more people, was caught again, set on fire, and survived. Once again he was thrown in prison, escaped, made more converts, and recaptured. This time, however, he finally won the crown of martyrdom when he was disemboweled.
CHALLENGE
St. Elmo wasn’t always so brave. He went into hiding for seven years to escape the persecution of Christians until an angel appeared to him and told him to return to his city. St. Elmo is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and is the patron saint of stomach problems. Today, ask for St. Elmo’s intercession to help you have the guts to stand up for your Catholic Christian faith, no matter how badly you’re persecuted.
