In 1117, Ranieri Scacceri was born in Italy to a wealthy merchant. Ranieri’s parents couldn’t get him to focus on his studies or his faith, instead, he became a wandering musician, staying up partying all night and sleeping all day, if at all. He lived a life of vice and sin until at 19, while performing for a large party at a castle, he met a holy hermit. After talking all night, the next day Ranieri burned his fiddle and his life took a new course. He worked for his father and became wealthy, but after his money began to give off a stench he gave it all away to the poor, took a 13-year pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and returned to be a Benedictine monk. He preached, fasted five days a week, and performed miraculous healings.
CHALLENGE
For Blessed Ranieri Scacceri, music connected him to his life of sin. As we make progress in the spiritual life, sometimes listening to music that reminds us of the “good times” brings back our bad habits. Is there music that is part of your life that ties you to your old self in a bad way? Today, take steps to give up listening to a band or genre of music that was part of your old self.
