The Saint Challenge Day 235 – St. Thomas More – June 22

Born in London in 1478, Thomas More was the son of a lawyer and judge. He served the Archbishop of Canterbury who thought he had great potential and arranged for Thomas to go to Oxford. After two years he began legal training and thought about being a monk, but then he married at 27. After his wife died six years later, he remarried, got involved in politics, and eventually became King Henry VIII’s secretary and personal advisor. He worked tirelessly to prevent the Protestant Reformation from taking hold in England, but he was unable to stop King Henry from starting the English Reformation. Thomas refused to support the king’s annulment or recognize his supremacy over the pope and resigned. He was convicted of treason and beheaded.

CHALLENGE

St. Thomas More did not attend the wedding of King Henry VIII to Anne Boylen and refused the spiritual validity of the king’s second marriage. Instead, he sent a letter wishing them happiness and health. We are often invited to attend weddings that we know are not spiritually valid, but in attending we are in fact affirming such a union is valid. Today pray for the courage to choose your faith over the consequences.
