The Saint Challenge Day 237 – Nativity of Saint John the Baptist – June 24

In St. Luke’s Gospel, we read that a righteous priest named Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth were old and childless. One day Zechariah was fulfilling his duties burning incense in the temple and the archangel Gabriel came and told him his wife would bear a son who would prepare the people to receive the Lord. Gabriel told him to name the boy John. Zechariah doubted that his wife could conceive in her old age, and was struck mute. As Gabriel foretold, Elizabeth became pregnant, When she gave birth Zechariah wrote on a tablet that the boy would be named John, and Zechariah’s mouth was opened. He was filled with the Holy Spirit and immediately sang the praises of God.

CHALLENGE

A prophet isn’t necessarily someone who forewarns of future events. Biblically, a prophet can also be an inspired teacher of the word of God. By our baptism, we are all called to be prophets. Today, dwell on these words of Zechariah, then pray to the Holy Spirit to help you be a prophet: “You will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give his people knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins.”
