The Saint Challenge Day 239 – St. José María Robles Hurtado – June 26

Born to very devout parents in 1888, José María Robles Hurtado entered the seminary at the age of 12, joined the Knights of Columbus, and was ordained at 25. He loved being a parish priest, but even more, he loved spreading the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He wrote and distributed pamphlets about the devotion, and also founded the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In defiance of the new Constitution of Mexico that prohibited any and all public processions and practices of faith, Fr. Robles organized a public ceremony on a hill where a giant cross would be erected, and over 40,000 people showed up. Fr. Robles was deemed a troublemaker, then arrested and hung while preparing to celebrate Mass.

CHALLENGE

St. José María Robles Hurtado was known as the “Madman of the Sacred Heart” for his devotion to the Sacred Heart Jesus and for his public proclamation that Christ is the King of Mexico. How can you proclaim Christ as King? Shirts and bumper stickers are great, but can you be more of a “madman”? Today, discuss with friends how together you can boldly—and publicly—claim your neighborhood, city, or state for the King of Kings.
