In the small village of Killaloe in 7th Century Ireland, Flannán was the son of an Irish chieftain. He joined the local monastery, and as a monk he worked as a bread baker. According to one story, there was a time when he baked non-stop for thirty-six hours. He eventually became the abbot where he earned a reputation for charity, hospitality, and care for the needy. The townspeople urged for him to be appointed bishop, so he went to Rome to be ordained. He was such a powerful and eloquent speaker that his own father renounced his position as chieftain, and became a monk.
