Born to Italian nobility in 1795, Vincent Pallotti decided at the age of 16 to leave his inheritance behind and become a priest and was ordained at the age of 23. He quickly received his doctorate in theology and was given an assistant professorship, but left it behind to devote his efforts to pastoral work. And work he did. He treated the sick during a cholera epidemic, raised funds for charities, opened schools to teach trades to the poor, started orphanages, and founded a religious order— now known as the Pallottines—for urban mission work. He died from a severe cold that he caught after one rainy night when he gave his coat to a beggar who had none.
CHALLENGE
The night before Ash Wednesday in 1835, St. Pallotti bravely walked through crowds of drunken revelers at the Roman Carnivale, and handed out slips of paper saying things like “life is short and death comes quickly”. Today, choose one of the sayings of St. Vincent Pallotti and share it on social media, through email, or maybe by handing it out on slips of paper.
