Chaplet for the Dead

SKU: ROSARY-CFD-1 Categories: ,

The Chaplet for the Dead — also called the Chaplet for the Holy Souls in Purgatory — was established by the Archconfraternity of Our Lady of Suffrage in Nimes, France, and approved by Pope Pius IX in 1873.

The Chaplet resembles a standard Rosary, except it has only 4 decades instead of five, and there is no center or medal. Recitation starts on the Cross, and has 4 introductory prayers, followed by 4 decades starting with 1 red Pater bead and 10 black Ave beads. The 5 red Pater beads represent the 5 wounds of Christ. The 40 black Ave beads are in memory of the 40 hours which Our Lord is believed to have spent in Limbo after His physical death but before His resurrection. There are 49 beads total. A partial indulgence is granted and applied to the souls in Purgatory for each recitation of this chaplet.

Our Chaplet for the Dead is made of heavy-gauge bronze wire and Czech fire-polished glass beads. The red Pater beads are cathedral-style with an antique coating. In addition, our Chaplet for the Dead uses a Pardon Crucifix, which is heavily indulgenced by the Catholic Church, and can be used to obtain additional indulgences for yourself or the Holy Souls of Purgatory.

Since each Chaplet for the Dead is made to order, large orders of 5 or more for Purgatorial Societies or Confraternities may incur additional wait times as we obtain materials. Please plan accordingly. Contact us if you have any questions.
