Not much is known about the early life of James Duckett other than he was born sometime in 16th Century England and raised a Protestant. While serving as an apprentice book printer in London, a friend gave him a book called The Foundation of the Catholic Religion and James decided to convert. He stopped attending Protestant services, and for this, he was jailed twice. Around the year 1590, he married a Catholic widow with whom he had a son, but of the twelve years they were married, he spent a total of nine of them in prison for multiple offenses of publishing Catholic books and pamphlets. He was betrayed by a friend in 1601 and sentenced to death by hanging.
CHALLENGE
Blessed James Duckett’s son became a Carthusian monk and recorded his father’s life, including this story: On his way to his martyrdom, James was given a cup of wine. He drank some then handed it to his wife and told her to drink and forgive his betrayer, persisting until she did. Who do you need to forgive? Today, read Matthew 6:14-15, say the Our Father, and forgive them.
