The Saint Challenge Day 138 – St. Patrick – March 17

Born in Scotland in 387, Patrick was the son of a Roman father and a mother who was a close relative to St. Martin of Tours. At the age of 16, Patrick was kidnapped by Irish raiders, taken back to Ireland, and sold as a slave to a Druid chieftain who made Patrick his shepherd. For six years he prayed while in the fields, and then one night in a dream he was visited by an angel. He escaped, fled 200 miles on foot, and talked his way onboard a boat to Britain. After throwing himself into the vocation of the priesthood, he returned to Ireland where he used the knowledge of Druidism and the Celtic language from his days as a slave to bring Christianity to the Emerald Isle. He performed miracles, cast out demons, and made tens of thousands of converts.

CHALLENGE

“Lorica” in Latin, means “breastplate” and refers to a knight’s armor worn to protect the chest. The Lorica of St. Patrick is a prayer of protection he composed that was sung as he and his procession marched through hostile lands, and they were unharmed by the ambush set for them. Today, recite or listen to the Lorica of St. Patrick… and don’t forget to wear something green!
