Scripture doesn’t record a single word St. Joseph ever spoke even though he was the patriarch of the Holy Family. We do know he was a man of action who trusted in God and followed the Lord’s commands. Jewish tradition helps us fill in some blanks about his life. For certain, St. Joseph was a descendant of David, so in Jewish tradition even though Jesus was not Joseph’s son by blood, he still was considered of the house of David which fulfilled prophesy. Though St. Joseph is frequently thought of as a carpenter, in the original Greek he was called a tekton, which is a master craftsman skilled in masonry as well as carpentry. Also, as a just man and faithful Jew, St. Joseph followed the law and would have recited the Psalms daily at the appointed hours, teaching the young Jesus to do the same.
