The Saint Challenge Day 221 – Blessed Maria Droste zu Vischering – June 8

The daughter of a count, Maria Droste zu Vischering was born in Germany on the Nativity of Mary in 1863. After she tamed her explosive childhood temper, at 15 she entered a school run by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart, and she began to develop an intense love for the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She started having mystical experiences and heard Jesus speak to her, then at 26, she joined the Good Shepherd Sisters and was given the name, “Maria of the Divine Heart”. After exceptional service in Germany, she was made superior of a convent in Portugal. She suffered increasingly from a disease of the spinal cord, but continued her work looking after everyone who knocked on the convent door until her death at age 35.

CHALLENGE

Blessed Maria Droste zu Vischering wrote several letters to Pope Leo XIII pleading for him to spread the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In response, he wrote the prayer consecrating the whole world to the Sacred Heart and instituted the First Friday devotion. The many graces of the Sacred Heart of Jesus are waiting for you and your family, so today, go to www.welcomehisheart.com and see how you can start—or strengthen—your devotion to the Sacred Heart.
