Lutgardis was born in Belgium in 1182. Her father was a businessman, and he lost her dowery—and with it her chance to be married—in a failed business deal when she was 12. Because it was better to be a nun than unmarried, she went to live at a Benedictine convent even though she had no draw to religious life. That changed when she had a vision of Christ, and at the age of 20, she made her solemn vows. For the next 44 years, she continued to have visions of Jesus, St. John the Evangelist, and Mary. Lutgardis also began levitating while in prayer, received the marks of the stigmata while deep in ecstasy, and had the gifts of miraculous healing and prophecy. On the advice of her friend, St. Christina the Astonishing, she joined the Cistercian order where she more fervently devoted her life to Christ, though blind for the last 11 years of her life.
CHALLENGE
The first recorded mystic revelation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was to St. Lutgardis, and in one of her mystical visions, Jesus exchanged his heart with hers. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is the best remedy for what ails our broken society. Today, recite the Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart.
