Cyril of Alexandria was born in Egypt in 376. His uncle was the archbishop of the Church in Alexandria, and Cyril accompanied him and became his student. When his uncle died in 412, Cyril replaced him and started his episcopate in the same fiery manner as his uncle. He closed the churches of heretics and drove Jews out of the city for killing Christians. Cyril also clashed with the Roman prefect in charge of Alexandria, causing over 400 monks to come out of the desert to riot and protect him. He was the first to use the word Theotokos declaring Mary the Mother of God, and his many theological works clarifying Church teachings on the Incarnation and the Trinity helped him earn the title Doctor of the Church.
CHALLENGE
St. Cyril of Alexandria wrote, “That anyone could doubt the right of the holy Virgin to be called the Mother of God fills with astonishment. Surely she must be the Mother of God if our Lord Jesus Christ is God, and she gave birth to him!” Today is also the feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Think of what is weighing you down the most in your life right now and with that intention pray the Chaplet of our Lady of Perpetual Help.
