Born the ninth of eleven children to a farm family in France in 1806, Catherine Laboure felt the call to religious life from an early age. Her mother died when she was eight and Catherine wound up running the house. Eventually, she followed her older sister and joined the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul and worked with the sick. On July 18, 1830, St. Catherine had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary who described a medal that she wanted made in her honor. Mary told St. Catherine that wearers of the medal would receive many graces. After it was credited with many miraculous cures during an epidemic in 1832, it came to be known as the Miraculous Medal.
