The youngest of the eight sons of Jesse, King David was a shepherd child from the tribe of Judah. The Holy Spirit guided the prophet Samuel to anoint him to succeed Saul to the throne of Israel. King David, called “a man after God’s own heart”, is the most-mentioned figure in the entire Bible. He is known for his defeat of Goliath in battle, his military successes over the enemies of Israel, the building of Jerusalem, his adulterous affair with Bathsheba, and the arranged death of her husband Uriah. He also planned for the building of the Temple, which David’s son Solomon completed after his death.
CHALLENGE
One of King David’s best qualities is that he readily admitted his sinfulness and accepted responsibility for his sins. He was also an accomplished songwriter and was the author of 150 psalms that frequently sang on the topic of his sin and God’s mercy. Today, read Psalm 51 and think about how you can integrate it into your prayer life.
